Wellington Beach Village of Wellington, Prince Edward County, Sandbanks

Wellington, PEC

An Inviting Escape

… we rounded the bend at Sandbanks Winery with Lake Ontario stretching endlessly away to the horizon, the over-canopied streets of a well-kept small town welcoming us in their embrace.

‘Where are we?’ I asked, bewildered.

‘The sign says Wellington’.

Weekends are booked, then longer summer stays and Wellington gets into your blood. The path of discovery leads from idyllic vacation playground, to rich, engaging and fulfilling hometown.

About Wellington

The shining water of Lake Ontario is only part of what makes Wellington special--the rest has to do with the village itself. Wellington is a full-service village with a strong sense of community pride and ownership. Many of the village’s great public spaces were actually built by the community--from fundraising, right on up to swinging the hammer. If the town needs something done, the people who live here will find a way to make it happen. For a full-time resident, this spirit is even more magical than the waterfront vistas.

Having said that, many homes have direct access to the waterfront and are also within walking distance of all the village amenities. And if you can’t afford waterfront, no worries! There is plenty of public access to Wellington’s glorious waterfront: the marina, the beach, the canal, and two city parks. You are never far from public water access no matter where you choose to live.

Wellington also has the happy coincidence of being located in the heart of the burgeoning wine region, with about 70% of PEC’s wineries within a five-ten minute drive from the village. In fact, we are so close to the wineries that a bike rental shop opened up in one of Wharf Lane’s properties, offering tourists the chance to ride from winery to winery and roll back home at the end of the day.  The shop has been a great success for several summers now.

Following the wave of wineries have been several successful breweries, cideries and a house of fine spirits.

Residents of Wellington live equidistant from the cities of Belleville and Trenton--each a 25-minute drive north. The cities each have a population of about 50 000 each, meaning residents of Wellington effectively live within a tri-city area with a population close to 125 000, which allows access to all of the amenities a larger tax base can enjoy.

In the greater geographical picture, Prince Edward County is located at the heart of the Montreal-Toronto-Ottawa triangle (about 13 million people strong). For those able to telecommute, PEC is a natural jumping off point for folks who have business in any three of Canada’s four largest cities. For entrepreneurs, there is a healthy base of potential customers, which is growing every year, thanks to the extensive media coverage the County is enjoying.
